Lithuania's foreign minister resigns

Vygaudas Ušackas, Lithuania's foreign minister, has resigned after the country's president, Dalia Grybauskaitė, declared that Ušackas no longer had her trust.

The president's office accused Ušackas of self-promotion and of pursuing policies that were at odds with the priorities set by the president. It did not, however, provide examples.

The lack of information has led observers to conclude that Ušackas's resignation is linked to the Lithuanian parliament's conclusion, adopted last week, that the US secret service operated a secret detention facility on Lithuanian soil during its ‘war on terror'.

The parliamentary probe, undertaken with Grybauskaitė's backing, also concluded that officials in Lithuania's intelligence service were aware of the secret prison run by the US Central Intelligence Agency. One of those officials, Mečys Laurinkus, was recalled as Lithuania's ambassador to Georgia.
