Defense Minister and former IRL chairman Mart Laar was hospitalized on Saturday night, February 18, after suffering a stroke, his family has said.
Laar, 51, was reported to be in stable condition as of Sunday afternoon and was communicating with family members. He remains under medical observation.
How long Laar will remain hospitalized is unknown. Minister of Education Jaak Aaviksoo, who served as Defense Minister from 2007 to 2011, will temporarily fill Laar's ministerial post.
Laar had also been serving as acting Prime Minister while Andrus Ansip is vacationing in Canada. That function will be taken over by Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus, a government spokeswoman told ERR.
