2014 marks the 70th anniversary of the 1944 mass exodus from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania that was triggered by the Soviet annexation of the Baltic republics.
This documentary has been selected for it's Gala debut at Toronto's 2014 Estdocs Film Festival (October 18). "Keepers of the Loom" tells the story of the skills and talent of the Estonian women of the Diaspora, fleeing the invading Russian armies in the fall of 1944 and the passion they felt for maintaining their identity through folk arts, textiles and clothing. Leaving Estonia, often with nothing but the clothes on their back, these remarkable women brought the rich heritage of Estonian folk costumes to their new homes in the western world. Now, we seek to preserve our community story and honour the journeys of those who came before us. And to tell the broader human story through the voices of our mothers, grandmothers and community.
