The Estonian government has nominated Siim Kallas to serve a second term as a European commissioner.

One of the two parties in the minority government, the Pro Patria/Res Publica party, had been opposed to the re-selection of Kallas as the country's commissioner. However, it withdrew its objection after talks with the other governing party, the Reform Party, of which Kallas, a former prime minister, and the current prime minister, Andrus Ansip, are members.

Kallas, currently a vice-president responsible for audit, administration and anti-fraud, is the first official nomination since José Manuel Barroso was confirmed for a second term as president of the European Commission in a vote by members of the European Parliament yesterday.
