A "WHO's who" of women's tennis bowed out of the 2012 Brisbane International but the next big thing may yet have been revealed in the final.

World No.34 Kaia Kanepi, 26, capped a giant-killing run at the event with a 6-2 6-1 thrashing of fellow unseeded player Daniela Hantuchova to clinch her second career title.

Promoters may have been privately seething after injury or rusty form struck down the likes of Sam Stosur, Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams at the star-studded tournament.

However, they may have unearthed a future superstar for the second straight year judging by Estonian Kanepi's impressive Brisbane run.

Last year then little-known world No.34 Petra Kvitova raised the Brisbane title aloft before claiming Wimbledon and a year-end number two ranking in a breakthrough 2011 season.

And anyone who witnessed Kanepi's disposal of former world No.5 Hantuchova would be backing history to repeat in 2012.
