Honoring Those Who Gave All
28 May 2012 EWR Online
U.S. Embassy Tallinn, May 28, 2012
In honor of all of those who have paid the ultimate price in the service of our country, U.S. Ambassador Michael C. Polt, along with Estonian Defense Minister Urmas Reinsalu, representatives from the U.S. military, as well as members of a visiting U.S. Congressional delegation placed a wreath at the base of the monument at Freedom Square in Tallinn this morning.

The United States marks the fourth Monday in May as Memorial Day, a day when Americans take time to remember all of the American men and women who died in military service for our country. Memorial Day originated in the aftermath of the American Civil War, but it has become a day on which the fallen soldiers of all wars are remembered in special programs held in cemeteries, churches, and other public meeting places.

Here in Estonia, we include the memory of two U.S. Army officers, Lt. Clifford A. Blanton and Lt. George W. Winfield, who lost their lives in Estonia while working with the Red Cross to combat a typhoid epidemic, as well as all of the soldiers, American and Estonian, who have died in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
