06 Apr 2010 EWR Online
BRACEBRIDGE, April 6, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament (Parry Sound-Muskoka), today announced funding for the Arts Council of Muskoka and the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival.

On May 8 and 9, 2010, the Arts Council of Muskoka will present its 4th annual edition of Walking in My Mother's Shoes, a community festival celebrating mothers and motherhood. Activities include visual arts exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances by local performers, poetry readings, artisan workshops, and demonstrations.

The following month, on June 26 and 27, 2010, the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival will present the 13th annual edition of the Kaleidoscope Children's Festival. Activities include musical and theatrical performances by local artists and demonstrations by local artisans.

"Our Government is proud to support these family-oriented celebrations," said Minister Moore. "These community festivals provide opportunities for Canadians to become involved and to celebrate Canadian arts and heritage right here at home."

"Both of these events promote a strong sense of pride among members of our community here in the Muskoka region," said Minister Clement.

"The board of the Arts Council of Muskoka is very pleased to have the support of the Government of Canada for a fourth year," said Saundra Turnbull, Chair of the Arts Council of Muskoka. "Walking in My Mother's Shoes has been a very successful event, bringing artists from all mediums together with the community to share the very special mother-child relationship. We thank you for your continued support."

"The Muskoka Lakes Music Festival is delighted to receive funding for its 13th annual Kaleidoscope Children's Festival, which has enabled the Festival to expand programming and opportunities for families to experience the arts together," said Gayle Dempsey, Director of Development for the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival. "We appreciate the Government of Canada's commitment and support to help our community explore our sense of place and to build pride in our cultural identity."

The Government of Canada has provided $3,100 to the Arts Council of Muskoka and $3,400 to the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
