TORONTO, Ont. – April 15, 2013 – John Carmichael, Member of Parliament for Don Valley-West, on behalf of Canada’s Environment Minister, the Honourable Peter Kent, today announced funding from the EcoAction Community Funding Program for a new environmental project in Ontario. Environmental Earth Angels will receive $99,000 in federal funding over two years to support local action to protect wildlife and natural habitat and to increase biodiversity.

“I am pleased that the Government of Canada is providing support for Environmental Earth Angels’ 100,000 Meters of Meadow project,” said MP Carmichael. “This initiative will create much-needed meadow habitat and will increase biodiversity across the province. The project will also engage community members and students in improving Ontario’s ecosystems.”

“Our government is taking real action to address the environmental priorities of Canadians and ensure we have clean air, clean water, and biologically diverse land for generations to come,” said Minister Kent. “EcoAction Community Funding supports community groups across the country willing to take concrete action through on-the-ground environmental projects. We are proud to partner with these organizations that are committed to conserving Canada’s natural legacy.”

This project will create meadow habitat in various sites across Ontario and will support pollinator species (such as bees) that live in these meadow ecosystems. Local community members will take part in habitat restoration activities to create four hectares of meadow habitat by planting 13,500 native plants.

“We are very grateful for this funding from the EcoAction Community Funding Program which will allow us to create four hectares of important meadow habitat. It is through great partnerships like this that vital work is accomplished in protecting our biodiversity and pollinators,” said Wendy Lee, Executive Director, Environmental Earth Angels.

The EcoAction Community Funding Program supports projects that rehabilitate, protect or enhance the natural environment, and builds the capacity of communities and individuals to ensure future protection. This year, the Government of Canada is providing over $4 million for over 100 new projects under this Program.

More information about the EcoAction Community Funding Program is available on Environment Canada’s website.
