Golden sweep for Karl Kuus
04 Apr 2008 EWR Online
The K1 (11-12 year olds) Provincial Alpine Ski Championships were held at Calabogie Ski Resort in Ontario March 13th-15th. Torontonian Karl Kuus produced a golden sweep — winning every run and every event. The events included Slalom (SL), Giant Slalom (GS) and the Kombi (K) event, each consisting of two runs, with the winner determined by the combined time.

The first event was the GS, where Karl led the pack, winning by over 3 seconds and taking the Provincial GS title. On the following day Karl continued his dominance by winning the Provincial SL title. On the final day of the competition Karl blasted the course by taking the Gold in the Kombi event. This phenomenal accomplishment brought Karl the Provincial K1 Alpine Male Overall Title for Ontario.

"I am very happy with my performance and look so forward again to going to the Whistler Cup as part of Team Canada", said Karl.

Karl Kuus has had an outstanding 07/08 season. He won almost every event he entered with the exception of 2 silvers and a crash in one race. His medal count for the season was an impressive 23 golds and 2 silvers. Karl also took the Ontario K1 overall Best Male Award by winning the Swiss Chalet K1 Individual series.

The top 4 Ontario athletes earned entry into the prestigious Whistler Cup held April 4th-6th in Whistler, British Columbia. After his outstanding performance at the Provincials Karl will also be representing Team Canada, the only boy from Ontario to do so.

There will be approximately 11 nations from around the world sending teams to compete in the event. Among them are perennial skiing powerhouses Austria, US, Italy and Finland, as well as Japan, Korea and Slovenia. They will race against athletes from each Canadian province.

Karl said, "I look forward to taking on the Europeans at Whistler Cup and showing them that Canada rocks".

Karl's older brother Tarvo also competed this season in the 13-14 year-old grouping, posting a 7th place finish at the King's Cup 2008. Tarvo also qualified and competed at the Provincial Alpine Ski Championships K2 (13-14 yr. olds) in Ontario.

Ron and Heidi Kuus are the proud parents of these two athletes and the founders of KUUSport Mfg. Ltd., manufacturers of skiing, snowboarding and x-c waxes, tools and accessories.
