At today’s extraordinary session of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, the foreign ministers agreed to extend existing restrictive measures imposed in March 2014 until September 2015. Additional persons to be submitted to the list of sanctions shall be presented by the European External Action Service within a week.

“Along with the foreign ministers we also gave the European Commission and the European External Action Service the task of making all necessary preparations for the use of additional restrictive measures,” Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said. “This gives government leaders meeting on February 12 the opportunity to make more specific choices regarding which additional restrictive measures to continue with.”

Emphasized in the conclusions of the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council is Russia’s responsibility for the Mariupol attack and the escalation of military activity in eastern Ukraine.

The European Union’s foreign policy leaders strongly condemned the attacks in Mariupol and the recent escalation of fighting in the Donetsk and Luhansk region of Ukraine, stressing that Russia must stop supporting and supplying the separatists.

The Foreign Affairs Council conclusions called on Russia to fully live up to its commitments under the Minsk agreements, including the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the conflict zone.

The European Union will continue to support persons affected by the conflict in Ukraine, of whom close to 900 000 are internally displaced and approximately 600 000 have been forced to leave the area of fighting. According to Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus, the Foreign Ministry plans to give Ukraine up to 2.35 million euros for development and humanitarian aid this year, including for providing e-government solutions, supporting the implementation of reforms and also for helping victims and internal refugees have basic necessities for everyday life.
