Fingrid to install another undersea cable

TALLINN — Finnish electricity transmission system operator Fingrid invests €320 million into the construction of the second electricity transmission cable EstLink2 between Estonia and Finland.

The 650-megawatt cable will be built in cooperation with the Estonian transmission system operator Elering and a €100 million investment from the European Union. Fingrid says the new cable is a direct result of the liberalization of the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian electricity markets.

The new transmission cable will be built in addition to the present 350-megawatt direct connection raising the total electricity transmission capacity between the countries to 1,000 megawatts. The electricity operators hope that the new line will start working in early 2014.
