With less than 3 weeks to go until “JK Jazz 2010” opens its gates, organizers are thrilled to announce that the star-studded lineup of performers is now complete.

Headlining the evening’s entertainment on Saturday August 28 is the “Peter Appleyard Quartet” featuring Peter Appleyard on the vibraphone, Dave Young on bass, John Sherwood on piano and Terry Clarke on drums. This quartet is arguably Canada’s all-start team of jazz performers and is worth the price of admission alone.

Peter Appleyard’s career spans more than five decades and in that time he has performed with legendary musicians, among them Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Duke Ellington & Oscar Peterson. He is certain to dazzle “JK Jazz 2010” attendees with his melodic improvisation and breathtaking harmonic variations. He is considered to be the greatest jazz vibraphonist on the planet by numerous jazz authorities.

Bassist Dave Young is a performer, composer and educator. He is a total musician, with artistic soul in abundance. As a jazz artist, he is a chameleon-like bassist, who often shines brightest in collaborative efforts with other musicians. Over his career, Dave has shared the stage with countless stars, among them: Oscar Peterson, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Zoot Simms, Joe Williams, Oliver Jones, Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones, Nat Adderly, Gary Burton, Ed Bickert, Don Thompson and countless others.

John Sherwood on the piano has his own sound but Oscar Peterson’s early influence is unmistakable. Today he is acknowledged by audiences and peers as one of the top jazz pianists in Canada. He appears regularly with Peter Appleyard but has performed and/or recorded with a long list of jazz greats, including: Moe Koffmann, Guido Basso, Kenny Wheeler, Rob McConnell, Ed Bickert, Jake Hanna and Butch Miles.

Terry Clarke on drums is a “JK Jazz” veteran dating back to the very first festival in 2007. He is a 2009 Juno Award winner for his first album “It’s about time” and a multiple winner of the “Best Drummer” award at the annual Canadian National Jazz Awards. In a career that spans over four decades, he has recorded on over 300 CDs and has appeared with virtually every Canadian jazz great.

In addition to the just-announced “Peter Appleyard Quartet”, festival attendees will enjoy countless other high-quality musical acts, many of whom have been profiled in previous editions of Estonian Life.

Noteworthy are Luis Mario Ochoa, Hilario Duran and their Cuban ensemble, stars of the Toronto and Canadian Latin jazz scene. They are featured at various jazz festivals and performances.
Luis Mario Ochoa began studying music in Cuba as an 11-year old, moved to Toronto in 1990 and embraced the city as his new home. He is a vocalist, guitarist, composer and arranger and has been touted as one of the leaders of Toronto’s Latin music scene. Ochoa also teaches at Humber College, where he conducts a Latin Jazz combo and the Humber Latin Big Band.

Hilario Durán is an integral and important part of the Canadian music scene. He is a faculty member at Toronto’s Humber College, as both adjunct Piano Professor and Ensemble Director and he performs as a special guest with international artists and orchestras. Originally from Cuba, Hilario Durán is based in Toronto, where he performs, records and from where he tours nationally and internationally.
