The U.S. State Department released the 2012 Trafficking in Persons Report, which praises Estonia’s recent enacting of a law specifically criminalizing trafficking in persons. Estonia, clearly dedicated to help trafficking victims, was among those countries who received a Tier Two ranking.

The 2012 Report includes recommendations on how Estonia can use the new law for successful prosecutions, andrise to Tier One. This annual report, released June 19, provides a clear and sobering analysis of the state of modern slavery and how we can strengthen our efforts to bring an end to this crime.

In her letter to the U.S. Congress on this matter, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote that, “Trafficking in persons deprives victims of their most basic freedom: to determine their own future.” U.S. Ambassador to Estonia Michael C. Polt stated that, “The U.S. Embassy and the Government of Estonia have made significant strides to combat trafficking in persons and we look forward to continuing this work, specifically through cooperation on implementing Estonia’s new anti-trafficking law.”
