Estonians at the Winter Olympics

Although a nation know for its winters, Estonian sucess at the Olympics has been emphatically at the Summer, rather than the Winter games.

Indeed, no athlete has won a medal under the blue-black-and white in winter. Ants Antson struck gold at Tokyo in 1964 in speed skating, Allar Levandi bronze in Calgary in 1988 in the Nordic combined (ski-jumping and cross-country skiing, not the biathlon that involves shooting). Both of those accomplishments came for athletes competing under the colours of the occupying Soviet Union. As the accompanying article notes, there is hope that 2002 will be a break-through year. -n.
