Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that now all the European Union member states have signed the Treaty of Lisbon, and this allows for the treaty to come into force this year already. “The decision by the Czech constitutional court that the Treaty of Lisbon does comply with the Czech constitution is an important step towards bringing the Treaty of Lisbon into effect,” said Paet. “Czech President Václav Klaus’s quick signing of the treaty also provides the opportunity for the Lisbon Treaty to come into effect before the end of this year,” he emphasised.

Paet noted that thanks to the Treaty of Lisbon being implemented, many obstacles that have hindered the structural development of the European Union as well as further enlargement will be removed. “Another important prospect is that with the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, the creation of a European External Action Service will become possible,” Paet said. He added that it is important for Estonia that consular functions are created at EU representations.
