The latest Population and Housing Census has been outlined by the Estonian authorities.

Professor Ene-Margit Tiit, head of methodology for the latest report, introduced the 2011 version to an audience at the University of Tartu.

She explained that there have been several changes to the population base in the Baltic nation since the last Census in 2000.

In addition, many people in Estonia are unaware that these changes cannot only be traced from registered records.

"Unfortunately, Estonian people are not yet aware of the fact that while changing their place of residence it should be registered in the Population Register, it is also useful for the person himself with regard to the future," the professor noted.

"The exact knowledge of [the] population's location is also necessary for planning new roads or kindergartens in the future."

Estonia's next Census will be calculated between December 31 2011 and March 31 2012. Results will be published in summer next year.
