Estonia Opens New Honorary Consulate in United States in Arizona

Estonian Ambassador to the United States Väino Reinart and Consul General in New York Jaanus Kirikmäe will open the Estonian Honorary Consulate in the area of Phoenix, Arizona on 2 April. The Estonian honorary consul in Arizona is Michael Corey Chan. Secretary of State of Arizona Ken Bennett, Mayor of Scottsdale Jim Lane, Mayor of Phoenix Phil Gordon, members of the diplomatic corps of Arizona, and representatives of the local Estonian community will also be attending the opening.

Honorary Consul Michael Corey Chan was born on 27 May 1974 in Panama City. He earned his doctorate degree in international law from Trinity College in Great Britain. The honorary consul is fluent in English, Spanish, and Chinese. He has also started to study Estonian. Chan has held many managerial positions in the business world and is currently the executive director of the Koide Group, which invests in business projects with innovative solutions. He is also actively involved in his family’s businesses, of which the most well-known is the Lafayette 148 textile and clothing company and brand. As of 2008 Chan is the director of the charitable foundation that bears his name.

There are currently eight Estonian honorary consuls active in the United States. Last weekend the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Charleston, North Carolina was opened.
