At a meeting with Moldovan Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca in Brussels on 25 January, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet confirmed Estonia’s support for starting negotiations for visa facilitation and free trade agreements with Moldova.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that it is necessary to make rapid progress in negotiations between the European Union and Moldova over a new association agreement. “The new agreement, which will replace the current partnership and co-operation agreement between the European Union and Moldova and which will include a free trade agreement, will bring European Union-Moldova relations to a new level,” said Foreign Minister Paet. Foreign Minister Paet stated that it is essential to agree on starting the visa dialogue this year. “The visa dialogue should begin during Spain’s European Union presidency,” Paet specified.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet confirmed that the European Union should continue intensified dialogue with Moldova, including within the framework of Eastern Partnership, in order to help the state of Moldova integrate with the European Union and implement economic reforms more effectively.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that the Transnistria issue also requires the European Union’s help in finding a resolution.

Also participating in the meeting with the Moldovan foreign minister were representatives from Romania, France, Lithuania, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Belgium, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Italy, and Great Britain, who also make up the so-named “Friends of Moldova” group.
