‘The Toronto Estonian Chess Club held its 65th Anniversary Tournament on Sunday November 15th at the Estonian House at 958 Broadview Avenue. Eight participants partook in this 5 round Active Chess Tournament. The Active chess format is 30 minutes per player. The tournament was governed by both Jaak Triefeldt and Jaak Järve. Before the tournament began the rules of play were explained to the players and a short speech was given by Jaak Järve paying homage to two previous Chess Club presidents- Erik Kalmar and Lembit Joselin.
The games were all exciting, with many close endgames. There were some blunders, but all in all everyone had a great time.
It was nice to see the father and son Veltmann team come out and demonstrate their strengths.
Congratulations to Martin Veltmann who won the tournament with a 4.5 out of 5 score, second place went to Jaak Triefeldt with 3 ½ points and third place went to Alar Petersoo also with 3 ½ points. Jaak beat out Alar by one point in the tiebreaking matchup.
The other participant scores were as follows: Toomas Trei 3, Jaak Järve 2.5, Alfred Veltmann 2, Mikk Mölder 1, Mai Vomm Järve 0.
A big thanks to Ülle Veltmann who provided the players with “pirukad”, kringel and coffee all day. The Toronto Estonian Chess club meets every first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm in the classroom nearest the parking lot for “friendly” games of chess and all are welcome.
