Our latest Artist of the week is a legend of Estonian art and literature scene, writer and painter Toomas Vint. Undoubtedly Mr Vint deserves a more special and elevated spot than “artist of the week” but in this case it’s a nod to the fact that his book An Unending Landscape was recently published in English by Anglo-American publishing house Dalkey Archive Press.

Toomas Vint has been described as a painter who writes, or a writer who paints – rather unusual feat. Vint was born in Tallinn, the son of a scientist. He studied biology and geography at Tartu University. He published his first prose in 1968 and became a member of the Estonian Artists’ Union in 1973 – and is a successful painter of what could be described as “neo-navist” metaphysical landscapes. His works have been exhibited in art galleries all over the world – in Tokyo, Helsinki, Montreal, Essen, Moscow, Budapest, Paris, New York, Gdansk, Berlin.................

Somebody likes his paintings. He sells enough to keep body and soul together.
His writing survives on government grants, or, involuntary contributions from taxpayers.

Are there any Vint fans out there? If so, please redeem his reputation by directing us to his best novel or short story.

Agreed. Puerile writing, focus on onanism (Kojamehe naine), in general deviant subject matter make Vint an author to avoid. His art is nothing to praise either....

This writer was born in the 1940's and educated by the Soviets. This has handicapped him with weak critical faculties. In his writing, Vint's social commentary calls a teenager to mind.
He's also obsessed with sex, much like a frustrated teenager. Voyeurism, bondage, sex with older women, quasi-incestuous fantasies, and everything else imaginable are matters of fascination for him worthy of many pages of prose.
