AKEN BASAAR #22. May 5, 2012 8 AM to 1 PM, St Andrew’s Lutheran Church
23 Mar 2012 Ellen Leivat
For 20 years the AKEN women organized a giant charitable rummage sale called HIIGELBASAAR,
which encompassed both floors of St Andrew’s Lutheran Church. Last year’s sale was downsized to one
floor of the church and was called by the cute name of MINIBASAAR.

But the “mini” part of the name turned out to be a bit of a misnomer because there was certainly nothing
mini about what the shoppers beheld when they entered the first floor hall of the church on May 14th of
last year. Therefore, this year no more “mini” - the sale is called simply “AKEN BASAAR #22”!

One important traditional aspect of the basaar was actually upsized last year! The AKEN BASAAR
Café and Bake Sale now has its own bright and luxurious space on the second floor of the church.
Tables, chairs, tablecloths, flowers! Shoppers can take a break from their heavy-duty shopping and rest
in comfort while enjoying coffee and scrumptious home-baked goods donated by the accomplished and
magnanimous women of the Estonian community. AND…. buy goodies to take home to enjoy later,
including the famous Estonian meat and carrot filled pastries called "pirukad"!

The organizers of the café, Tiia Remmelkoor, Leida Sepp and Eneke Mirka, are hoping for a similar
big-hearted and charitable response from the bakers this year and are challenging the men who enjoy
baking to come forward to join the roster of women bakers. And this time around a new-fund-raising
venture, a “lucky draw”, is being added to enhance the second-floor café experience.

Here’s the nitty-gritty of what and when to donate. Donations will be gratefully received at St Andrew’s
Lutheran Church, corner of Jarvis and Carlton Streets, on Wednesday and Thursday May 2nd and
May 3rd from 1 pm to 8 pm:
• kitchen and household items
• glass, porcelain, crystal, pottery
