“JK Jazz 2010” is the fourth annual two-day jazz festival on the weekend just before Labour Day weekend, in Udora, ON. Udora is located an hour north-east of Toronto. This year’s festival is on Sat.Aug.28 & Sun.Aug.29.

The festival is a fund-raising event in support of Camp JK, a children’s summer camp that has been in operation in Udora since 1953. In its first three years the festivals have attracted an audience of close to 2,500 people.

SNEAK PEEK AT THE FESTIVAL LINE-UP

In addition to local jazz greats like Peter Appleyard, Terry Clarke, Hilario Duran, Luis Mario Ochoa, Sophia Perlman, Adrean Farrugia, Armas Maiste, Eric Soostar and others, this year’s festival showcases a five-member jazz ensemble from Estonia along with two accomplished female vocalists. All seven are established jazz stars in Estonia and throughout Europe.

On Thursday August 26, Toronto’s intimate jazz nightspot, the Trane Studio, presents these Estonian jazz musicians along with vocalist Kadri Voorand in an up-close and cozy venue, setting the mood for the weekend’s festival.

MEMBERS OF THE ENSEMBLE ARE

Raivo Tafenau (sax) – an accomplished saxophonist whose professional career began in 1992. Since then he has released a half-dozen albums and has performed extensively in Europe, North America and Russia. In 2010 he was awarded “Jazz Artist of the Year” in Estonia.

Mihkel Mälgand (bass /double bass) – a sought-after bass and double bass artist. Has performed with most of Estonia’s jazz artists and has played on more than 50 CDs. A member of the Estonian Dream Big Band, Mälgand travels and performs extensively.

Virgo Sillamaa (guitar) - one of the busiest and most versatile young jazz guitarists to emerge from Estonia in the last five years. In 2008 Sillamaa was granted the first "Tiit Paulus scholarship" for a guitar player. He also teaches improvisation, harmony and ensemble classes in the Ots Music School in Tallinn. He has written several commissioned programs and has composed music for theatrical and dance performances.

Jürmo Eespere (piano) - began studying piano almost 30 years ago. Studied extensively in Finland. A successful and accomplished pianist, he has worked with local and international stars. Eespere has been a member of the music faculties in Tallinn and Viljandi, in Estonia.

Eno Kollom (drums) – started his musical schooling as a 13-year old and completed his studies in 2009 at the Estonian Music and Theatre Academy in Jazz studies. Kollom has been known to play what he likes but most recently he seems to be drawn to jazz performances.
