The reason Russia is pausing in its aggression is that the Ukrainian military has turned out to be a much tougher nut to crack than Putin had anticipated. The final straw was probably when he saw 300 of his best special forces troops chopped into hamburger at the Donetsk Airport on Dec. 1st.

But Ukraine should not give so much as one thin dime to the DNR and the LNR. Russia wanted them, let Russia have them. The most productive part of the population either has already left or will soon be leaving permanently, leaving behind the uneducated, pensioners, and drunken "vatniks".

Instead, the Ukrainians should be working 24/7 on reinforcing their 2,000 km border with Russia to ensure that any further Russian military adventurism will result in tens of thousands of dead Russians coming home in zinc-lined coffins. Assuming that Barack Obama can summon up the backbone to sign the Ukrainian Freedom Support Act that was passed unanimously by the US Congress this week, Ukraine's army should soon have plenty of state-of-the-art anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons.
