The former soviet governments continue suspicous of all elements
outside their borders. The fact remains that religious beliefs don't have borders to observe.

"give the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church – the Uniates -- a patriarch (boardnews.ru/index.php/obshchestvo/2901-imeem-ykrainskogo-papy)". broadnews state something else: "преподнесет Украинскую греко-католическую церковь к патриаршего достоинства". - Irresponsible reporting!
Paul Goble should know better than to confuse the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church with the Ukrainians Orthodox Churches of the Kyiv and Moscow Patriarchates (the latter being a branch of the Russian Orthodox Church). But this is not the only shortcoming of Goble's article. The original Russian article in broadnews.ru is much richer in information and much more comprehensive in the treatment of the complicated relations between the Ukrainian and Russian Churches and the possible future involvement of the Papacy in the solution of this problem. The original Russian article deserves a read because the Goble article does not do it justice.

Mr Gobel condescendingly wrights as a Muscovite in Estonian clothing. Besides "Greek Catholic" is erroneous for Greco Catholic and "Uniate" is just plain racest.

Excellent analysis, as usual, Mr. Goble! Love to see Moscow get its knickers all twisted because someone likes Ukrainians. It reveals, over and over again, their paranoid and insincere attitude towards this country and its people. Moreover, nothing anyone can to to reassure them will ever work because the problem is internal. In terms of dialog among churches, perhaps we're finally moving together after all these centuries of schisms. Again, Moscow's rejection of Rome is, on some level, a rejection of Christ who, after all, built his church on that Rock.
