Questions02 Jan 2012 09:24
Congratulations! However, much like the new "association" that has suddenly cropped up, there is little in the way of explanation as to what has transpired and how this occurred. Where is Eesti Elu online? Is this a project of Tartu College? Is this a community project or a commercial one? Given that it seems as though all of the newspapers are now owned by on man - or at the very least, run by one man - is there any accountability? And if so, to whom? This "new" website leaves the impression that one person is controlling all of the news and communications for the entire Estonian worldwide diaspora: a tremendous and potentially worrisome amount of power for one single individual. I'm sure that we all wish him (them?) the best of luck with the hope that he/they wield this new and awesome power with respect and dignity.
Mart J02 Jan 2012 12:45
Agreed. More Info is needed.
Also, Does Mr. Sarapuu have a degree in journalism? What qualifies him to edit a newspaper in the first place? Or does he plan to be the owner of it?
Mis, miks, kes ja kus?02 Jan 2012 10:24
What has transpired with EestiElu?
Mart J02 Jan 2012 12:57
The idea of a site that contains news and updates about Estonians around the globe is interesting, if that's what the intent is. And that the old Eesti Elu may remain but the new Estonian World Review will provide news and info about Estonians around the globe.

The title "Estonian World Review" however sounds more like the name of an academic journal than a newspaper or news site.

Judging from the above description, whoever wrote it doesn't have a background in journalism. (Journalists write in concise, short direct sentences.)

Wow! All the experts in journalism and linguistics are starting to come out!

There sure are talented people in our community!

I wish all the best to EWR and Happy New Year to everybody.
Strange behaviour03 Jan 2012 12:31
Bizarre that serious, reasonable questions about the whereabouts and status of Eesti Elu are being attacked with a vicious tone and zeal similar to Putin's Nashies. Did something go sour here? Why are the questions being avoided?
blind03 Jan 2012 13:26
Can you please point out the 'vicious tone and zeal of the attacks' to these questions in this thread?

Only person using this type of language is you.
oki03 Jan 2012 13:38
Looking at your Putin reference, it seems that modified Godwin's law still holds true ...
Honderich04 Jan 2012 11:29
Eesti Elu is and was a print edition, aimed to satsify the info news of the older generation(s). eesti.ca predated Eesti Elu, and was always, as I understand, aimed at the younger internet savvy generation. Articles appeared and appear there that were unique to the site. Videos, etc. Where do you assume that the newspaper Eesti Elu was in any proprietary position? Be happy, that Vaado and his team have managed to pull something off that others dream of. Miks on meil neid nokk kinni, saba lahti irisejaid nii palju?
Something wonderful02 Jan 2012 16:19
What a wonderful surprise! Wishing Vaado and his team all the best in the new year. May this be the beginning of something fantastic.
I agree03 Jan 2012 08:45
All the best! But what's with the "sputnik" on the masthead?

Yes, I get that its tilting to the right. And yes, I can see the lowercase "e" (Somewhat unpatriotic, that -- it should be a Capital "E" and would be better yet if it had a little arm, holding a sword, but I digress...) And the blue is some kind of weird aquanarine, that reminds me of 1970s bathroom fixtures. Oleks lippu, või taeva sinine...

Aga siiski õnne soovides!
artsie03 Jan 2012 09:11
Hmm, looking at the logo, I can see the e, the globe, I can see the compass, or "sõlg". I personally like it.

As for the color, there are other options beside the flag-blue. You don't have to wrap yourself in the flag to be patriotic.

You should have seen the movie "Monument to please everybody" at last years' estdocs, puts things in perspective.
Sputnik04 Jan 2012 22:30
Dear Artsie - I can't say I see a sõlg. A compass or astrolabe maybe, or a childs spinning top - an animated version would be fun to see. I still like the sputnik idea although my original image of väliseestlased being out in space orbiting around kodu Eesti, keeping in touch by internet via EWR has been revised after reading the intervening commentaries + obviously the sputnik is home base for a large number of these commentators and a very appropriate banner for them to congregate under...

You are right about all the wacko commentators here, I think most of the wackos have strong feelings about VS and can't stand anything he does. But for some funny reason they can't detach themselves either, its like a drug to them.

Maybe it has something to do with 1997-98.

EWR will do just fine. It is but one of many sources of information on the internet.
If EWR isn't to your liking, troll around to alternative websites and portals.

To the editor or whomever chooses which comments get posted...

I notice that my previous comments concerning possible copyright issues with the material posted here has been deleted in both the Estonian and English article. Did this hit too close to home and you don't want your readers to be aware of this? Shame on you for not answering or even posting the comments. Obviously, there is something you must be doing wrong and didn't want it pointed out. Several people have commented (verbally) about this matter and if you don't have permissions, I'm sure you will be hearing from the papers soon.
*04 Jan 2012 10:27
Does the EWR team have to answer to you?
Are you the owner?
If not, things will proceed as they will.
Client04 Jan 2012 11:33
You've got a wrong business attitude if you only answer to the owner. Know who your customers are ! Business 101. You'd be looking for a job if I was the owner !
*04 Jan 2012 13:03
Ahh customers!
How much are you paying to access this website ?

Suspicious04 Jan 2012 14:25
I also had my last comment removed. There must be something really fishy going on here. My rather simple question was:
1) Just 4 days ago there was a large EESTI ELU banner across the top of this website including a reference to being owned by Tartu College. It is no longer there.
2) If eesti.ca was started with community dollars and maintained with community dollars, the community should have a right to know what has happened with Eesti Elu.

Pretty simple and innocent question. Why does it keep getting removed?
#04 Jan 2012 15:40
As far as I know:
1. eesti.ca was not started with community $.
2. eesti.ca was/is not maintained by community $
Wrong04 Jan 2012 15:56
As far as I know, it received a good deal of community funding over the past 10 years and would not have got off the ground without it (including Tartu College funding). If this is a private venture and did get community funding, was any of that $$ paid back to the community?
Also, do these "partner" newspapers realize that this new venture is sucking readers away from their own websites? If anything, this new website will ensure that the local newspapers abroad disappear much more quickly. Shame that this was not very well thought out.
#04 Jan 2012 16:20
Interesting! You must know something that I don't. So how much community money is invested in eesti.ca? Who exactly in the community paid for it? The bank, the ESK, the EKN?

As far as know, Eesti Elu and TC are not community owned, they are private companies. The fact that community uses spac in TC and there is a mutual symbiotic relationship does not mean that community owns TC. The same is for the Eesti Maja, community does not own it, it is owned by its shareholders.

Looking at the partner newspaper websites, I don't think these newspapers are in any danger loosing significant ad revenue from their own sites. I don't think there simply is any ad revenue.

And in general, I don't understand your attitude. Looking around in the new EWR, I can still get all the old EE articles, videos, pictures, etc. I get everything that used to be there + other stuff. So what are you complaining about?

Is it becaue you didn't like it?
Collective Farming?04 Jan 2012 18:28
If I were a volunteer writer for one of these smaller community newspapers, I'd be insulted and infuriated by your comment. Their work has an enormous value. To see it and their readers devoured by the EWR "collective's" commissar is unfortunate to say the least.
Not answered04 Jan 2012 18:02
My original question/statement concerned what the copyright issues of EWR using articles from other papers. Does the EWR have permission to do so? Are the papers supplying them with articles? If there is no permission, this is indeed setting up the small papers to fail, since why should I purchase a subscription if I can read their articles here for free?

I hope this gets posted, unlike the deletion before. If things get clarified for the EWR, your success can be assured. It's a simple matter of getting permissios and working together. I truly wish for you all the best, but please have all your t's crossed and i's dotted.

I guess you should read the official press release that should address the copyright issues. http://www.eesti.ca/index.php?...
It is both in English and Estonian. Quoting from the press release:

"The new portal was created in cooperation with several Estonian language media outlets located outside of Estonia, which report in Australia, Canada, Germany, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. "
