The first paragraph in this anonymous online piece is very alarming and suggests a sinister plot. What evidence do you have of a conspiracy to destroy local archives and those in Estonia? Who is attempting to commit such acts?

Why?

Estonian Life online should be praised for notifying the public of the possibility of a very important part of Hungarian history to be erased through the whims of politicians. We should all write the Hungarian ambassador about our concerns. This possibility of tampering with archives is similar to the Estonian situation whereby privacy of information legislation makes it very difficult to affirm such things as to whether a person had been a member of the communist party or not. It seems that those with skeltons in their closet are anxious to keep that closet door closed.

Unfortunate about the Hungarians. But who is trying to destroy our local archives? The accusation has been made- let's see some evidence!

You appear to be aware of something more sinister, or are you just an agitator?

An anonymous article that broadly accuses archive workers in the diaspora of collaborating with some mysterious group in Estonia to remove or destroy archival material. Sounds like agitation to me - or just lunacy.

"...similar actions in Estonia but also with regard to the future of local archives within the diaspora. Estonian refugees from all forms of totalitarianism, but most especially from communism, did not keep, collect, and systematically archive records documenting the struggle for freedom abroad so that vested interest groups could have access that might mean either destruction or removal of material critical to these efforts."

Local communists and alike have nothing to fear in Estonia since their ''sins'' were atoned shortly in the beginning of the Republic when the Estonian Security Police gave a free pass to anyone seeking it as long as they came to the ESP and ''confessed their sins''

Those that did go to the ESP and talked of their involvement and actions with the communist party, kgb and other oppressive forces had their records sealed and we're given an amnesty to all crimes committed during the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union.
