Immediately before being overtaken by the Singing Revolution, Savisaar was actually one of the authors of very significant Soviet-era plans to keep Estonia part of the Russian Empire, but with greater autonomy (the Self-Managing Estonia IME scheme). -------

That is quite funny statement, because another author of that IME proposal you are talking about was the founder of Estonian current ruling party Reformierakond, Mr. Siim Kallas himself. So I guess all the members of Reformierakond are Russian agents too ? I am no fan of Savisaar but I really hate how every article here is always talking only one side of story.

Nobody knew what was going to happen to the Soviet Union back then and everybody, myself included, was surprised when the communist party collapsed.
I remember the idea of a "self managing Estonia" that was going to be run much like Poland was with Estoninans in charge of internal affairs and a pro-Soviet foreign policy. It is ironic that such an Estonia would have had more independence and rights that the country now has under the European Union.

Take the oft-quoted Estonian adage, "I know of nobody, who knows someone, who knows someone else, who would vote for Savisaar." It's true. I travel often and extensively in Estonia. Nobody I've met has anyhting positive to say about Savisaar. So where does he get his credibility. I see that even local chapters of the party are giving him a vote of confidence. Estam's piece might be full of hyperbole, but his emotions are all too familiar - everone I've met feels the same way. So do something about at elections! Don't let Savisaar get away with hollow promises and lies.
