Magnificent piece of work. The following paragraph:
"But by publicly fearing the possibility of being saddled with indemnification, Medvedev has indirectly admitted possible culpability in war crimes and crimes against humanity."
should be reworked into a piece geared towards North Americans and pitched to our dailies.
Nice to see LL coming back to form!!

The issue of reparations is so unrealistic that it does not even invite serious debate. There are so many other countries that owe money or apologies that it would be never ending. Imagine if the USA had to start giving land back to Mexico and the natives. Only countries that lose wars usually need to pay or apologize.

I guess my advice to get in touch with russemb was taken! Next step, get in touch with the people who run this group: http://www.nashi.su/
I can guarantee that they'd love to hear from someone like you. Not sure if it's just coincidence, but all of your posts are right in line with the message they're trying to put out!

What lands did the the USA take from the Mexicans?
By Stander20 Nov 2009 22:34
To Seedrioru Jack.

With the Mexican-American War, the US gained California which was the main objective of the war, along with Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and part of Wyoming. The US already occupied the Oregon Territory (present-day Oregon & Washington), but they had to share it with the British. The US offered to buy the territory for thirty million dollars, but Mexico refused to sell. There was a border dispute in Texas, and Mexico made the mistake of firing the first shots. After the war Mexico was forced to sell the territory that the US originally wanted, and at the original price of thirty million dollars.

The San Fernando cathedral, oldest in the United States was built by the Spanish in the 1740's in San Antonio.

The Alamo, now a solemn US shrine, was an old Spanish mission.

There's a big difference. If Spain had developed an independence movement here and won legitimate statehood and created a government, but then the USA took it from them by force, that would have been an illegal occupation.

Well, the Soviets got the land they wanted, but the root of the problem for Medvedev & Putin is that the official history of WWII is bias and wrong. Little by little what really happened is coming to light, and we learnt that desinformation still is the name of the game and in spite of that the Baltic countries became independent; Könisberg still is in Russian hands, heavily poluted, and sooner or later Germany will make a claim on that land, and the land lootedby the poles. A recognition to the Forest Brothers is a must, since they never surrendered.
