This guy's columns in Postimees are insufferably bad clunkers - probably published in order to reinforce "kodueestlaste" prejudices about väliseestlased being a bunch of boorish dimwits.

Some of the individuals in the last pargraph here might object to the association, Katariina too.
here and now16 Oct 2009 13:19
'Vello' is actually an American who spent most of his life as a U.S. adman (advertising account manager) state-side and whose real name is Scott Diel.

He is not a väliseestlane, otherwise he would know more about Estonia than his stories show.

He has been in the Baltics since the early 90s. He has spent most of his time in Estonia, and yes, he has married an local Estonian woman.

He oversaw over the slow death of the Tallinn-based City Paper before its Finnish owners sold its corpse to some Latvians.

He is desperate for cash and even tries to ride on Tallinn city busses for free. He says he does it because he thinks the busses are not good enough for him to pay for the fare.

He is basically stuck with Vello because under his real name no one in Estonia would pay him for the rubbish he writes. One sad case.
Meinhard Krebs16 Oct 2009 14:50
Can confirm that Vello is Scott Diel, having talked with him on more than one occasion, and that his blog and authoring persona is fictitious. He is not a Canadian or a Canadian Estonian. This American good old boy is basically of the same mold as Giustino of "Itching for Eestimaa" with the difference that Giustino has not been in the Peace Corps. If one dabbles in Balt-bashing or being cynical in respect to Estonians, I figure he as a resident ought to engage in constructive criticism or just plain criticism under his true name. Vello Vikerkaar is a false flag identity. As an long-term resident of Estonia and as an Estonian I believe there is a lot of fun that can be poked at the residents of the country, but need one wear a mask when doing so?
Oscar Mayer16 Oct 2009 18:12

Thanks for the low-down on Vello Vikerkaar.
Now, can you do the same for Maxin de la Trine?
there and then17 Oct 2009 01:39
The blog 'Giustino "Itching for Eestimaa"' is written by a Justin Petrone who lives in Tartu and is married to an Estonian journalist Epp Petrone. Some Estonian newspapers pick up or link to his blog for their online editions.

Mr. Petrone makes no efforts to hide who he is on his blog pages. He is usually published in Estonian newspapers under his own name and does not pretend to be a Canadian or Estonian or anyone else other than who he is.

In his defence, Mr. Deil has also been published under his own name in the Estonian press or has had at least one interview done under his real name (cf. Riina Luik, 'Mitte lihtsalt Eesti fänn' PM 14.05.2005).

I wonder how the recently passed amendments to the Law on Identity Theft in Estonia can be interpreted for Mr. Deil. Could be an interesting test case on the edge of the law.

Piinlik on lugeda neid sapiseid kommentaare – paistab, et huumorimeel on väliseesti ja expat’ide kogukonnast kadunud. Vello võib olla kriitiline, kuid ta naerab nii maailma kui ka enda yle.
Miks on pseudonyymi all kirjutamine kuritegu?

Mingus20 Oct 2009 02:34
I've read Vello for over a year and I haven't interpreted anything he's said as an attack on Estonia. Criticism, yes. Fairness, yes. If you can't accept criticism for what it's worth--constructive or not--that means you're satisfied with the status quo. And if the status quo is not very good? Well, think about what you're actually defending.

If I had to choose between listening to Vello talk about Estonia or a väliseestlane talking about Estonia, of course I would choose Vello. Why? Because he's actually here. Where are the väliseestlased? At home reminiscing about a paradise they've built up in their heads but are not patriotic enough to actually go (back) to.

Vello obviously cares deeply for Estonia, and by speaking his mind, he is attempting to bring to the front some taboo issues. I can tell he's not Estonian simply by the fact that he doesn't just sling mud at anyone he happens to disagree with, and if he sees a problem, he doesn't repress it deep inside.
Eestist20 Oct 2009 03:18
Eestlased üldse on üks laisk rahvus Vello Vikerkaare arvates.

Estonia is an imperfect country, like all countries. In order to improve, you have to know your weak points. What free-thinking and slightly intelligent person would voluntarily want to serve in a tiny military whose only reason for being is to unsuccessfully defend itself from the massive Russian army? Lääneots himself knows this (his total home warfare defense plan), so what's wrong with Vello talking about it?

The problem I have with Estonia is that it is arrogant about things that you're just supposed to do anyways. "We give our children universal education." You're supposed to! But talk about the near complete lack of common courtesy on public streets between Estonian and Estonian and you're condemned? That's what I consider a taboo subject. Poking fun at middle-aged businessmen shaving their heads? I think that's a good thing to poke fun at. If you're more aware of what others think of you, you can improve in ways you wouldn't have thought of before.

People love Scandinavia for their public transport, for just one example. Foreigners are disgusted by the smells and dirtiness of Tallinn's trams. If you want a strong Estonia, you will listen to what people say instead of just whining about someone saying something not 100% positive about what you think, for whatever reason, is a golden paradise.

Jeez, you make this Vello (and Deil too) out to be a really bad guy. If you were criticizing his writing, it'd at least be hearing the arguments. But there is lots of ad hominem trash talking here plus a couple of conspiracy theories about the Estonian press wanting to keep a certain image of foreign Estonians alive.

Is there a chance some are taking themselves waaaay too seriously? I mean, does the world really have any interest at all in Estonia? And do you really think that one guy writing whose mother doesn't like the migratsiooniamet workers is doing harm to your country? If you are worried about the image of your nation, don't you think the international committees who visit and issue negative reports about minority rights are doing more damage?
Eestist20 Oct 2009 06:19
From Vello Vikerkaar blog forigner understands that: Vello Vikerkaar dont get Estonian citizenship beacuse her mother is Estonian of russian extraction and speaks estonian with accent.
From Vello Vikerkaar blog forigner understands that her mother must fly to Estonia to get passport. This is not true she can get passport from Estonian Embassy in Canada.
So what our forigner understands: Estonia disriminates Vello Vikerkaar because hes mother is Russian. So thats why some of hes entries are dangerous to Estonia.
Real truth is hes mother and "Vello" dont get Estonian citizenship because she is American.

What do you mean, "dangerous to Estonia"? You didn't hear any Americans telling the world press to shut up about Bush because their opinions were dangerous to America. Maybe "damaging to Estonia" would be a better term, but I somehow think that even that would be overreacting. The only thing here that could damage Estonia's reputation as a free country would be its inability to receive criticism. No one wants a kid on your team like that.

Yes damaging is right word!
I dont´t think he must shut up, but he must stop pretending to be Canadian Estonian. He must start to publish under hes own name and nationality. But I bet he dont´t write such things any more because he is afraid and some of stuff he is writing is not true.
What about humor: Top Gear is funny, Andrus Kivirähk is funny - Scott Diel is not:)

The point is -hes (Scott Diel) mother is not väliseestlane and he is not väliseestlane either! He is just typical yank who pretends to be Canadian estonian. I dont´t think canadian estonians are so excited of such new member of community. Here are already news that anti-estonian cremlin agents use hes- Vello Vikerkaar statements. Lena Hietanen for excample. I think and several other people here that Scott Diel must stop pretending to be canadian Estonian.
Scott Diel thinks that estonian boys must serve in army in other ways they are not real men.:)
Scott Diel writes that he can`t get Estonian citzenship because her mother is russian and she must fly to Estonian to get estonian passport. This is just nonsense.
I have read all Vello Vikerkaar blog entries and hes writings in Baltlantis. He is just afraid to publish all this "humor" and "critisism" under hes own name. Sorry my english is not good, I just have my crappy universal Estonian education.
I will go now and start discriminate minorities!!!!

I have read Vello's book and did not see a single story about his mother or citizenship, except for story about crazy Russian children who thought life was perfect in the UK. Are you talking about some obscure comment somewhere that maybe I didn't read? (Example: the comment about him riding buses for free didn't seem fair--I did happen to read the story about public transport in Üks.)

In all cases, you're talking out of your tagumikud. You say Vello's pieces are crap, yet they're popular among päris- or kodueestlased in Estonia. You say the criticism is damaging or dangerous yet you say it's only that way because a pseudonym is involved?

Put away your marijuana pipe, crawl out of your cave and discover the real world.

I'd just like to say I'm a väliseestlane who is not psycho or paranoid. I haven't read much Vello and so can't follow all the discussion here but what I've read made me laugh.

I don't know about the man's mother. Maybe she's a crazy old bat. Mine is. I can say that because she only reads the print version of Eesti Elu. (She's not internet savvy.)

Estonia is higher than the US in many things. It's number one in the world, in fact, for:
Suicide
Divorce
Prostate cancer mortality
Hummers per capita
And my favorite: literacy. (I always brag about that one!)
It's also officially the unhappiest country in the European Union. I think people like Vello are very necessary.

Who said anything about savors, or even saviors? Or sucide or devorce? By the way, the word is 'his', not 'hes'. There should be automatic spell-check in these comment boxes, or can't you be bothered to use it? That's specifically what Vello talks about...people just can't be bothered to do anything about their own problems. Thank you for demonstrating one perfect example.

And Edward was referring to 'you' in the plural, unless he somehow meant that the unfoundedly angry detractors on this thread are collectively speaking out of one giant anus. I understood 'anuses' in the plural...one for each of you.

Bottom line: A vast number of Estonians (it may even be a majority, but I doubt there's any intel on that) simply cannot take criticism. But they sure can dish it out. Take your blinders off, take a deep breath and try to understand that Vello means no offense. Nor do I. By continuing to behave in this fashion, you are saying that Estonia is free of problems. I don't need to explain how this makes you look.

One last thought before I leave this thoroughly albeit typically unpleasant debate with Estonians: I've met both Vello and Scott Diel. That Liina's a hottie!

Tunnen Vello Vikerkaart isiklikult. On väga solvav lugeda teda halvustavaid kommentaare. Hullem kui delfi.ee puhul. Häbi!
Huffingtonpostis kirjutav Scott Diel on väljamõeldis. Sama võib öelda ka Postimehes kirjutava Abdul Turay kohta, sest Eestis teatavasti neegrid üle poole aasta ela.

Mingus - amen brother! while i agree with you that estonians are not the best at swallowing criticism (i am an estonian and been surprised about people not being able to accept the whole picture about themselves and that only the bright side is recognized), i think that it's an especially big issue amongst väliseestlased who just can't tolerate any opinion that's not 100% positive about their holy land.
Rainbou - i think Mingus clarified that "tagumikud " issue - indeed, it wasn't only your tagumik that was talked about.
