...that a man who claims he wants to memorialize the victims of communism, also uses our suffering for crass partisan theatrics. Last week at a rally in Calgary, Kenny and his supporters evoked dark images of Stalin and Lenin to mock and criticize the opposition parties. Not only was it a grossly inappropriate mischaracterization but thoroughly insulting for those of us whose families suffered under communism.

As an individual who has committed much of her personal time to increase awareness of our tragic history, I find this sort of ugly partisan display repulsive. It also brings into question the motives of Mr. Kenny and his tiny, select private board. Is the purpose of his project to further his and his board’s personal political agenda on the back of our tragic history?

I call on the EKN to publicly ask for clarification from Mr. Kenny as to whether he supports such negative and insensitive evocations and to ask for a public apology.

Images from the rally:
Notice the CCCP sign and the “written in Russian so that the communists can understand” sign.

Tribute to Liberty is grateful for the support that the Canadian government has shown thus far. The Board is looking forward to the support of all parties as the project moves forward. Individual Tribute to Liberty Board members are not members of, nor do they solely represent or support, any one particular political party. If the person who wrote the above comment would like to become involved with the project at the community level and assist with the organization of upcoming events, your assistance would be very much welcomed. Tribute to Liberty is a non-profit, volunteer organization. The success of a project of this magnitude requires a great deal of collaboration, time, commitment and the assistance of all who believe that a monument to victims of crimes of communism should be erected in our nation's capital. All support will be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps some in the community will tolerate our collective suffering under communism being ostensibly turned into a crass form of political currency by Mr. Kenny as a necessary evil. But if coupled with the nonchalant and grossly insensitive way in which Mr. Kenny’s friends use images that represent our suffering to further their domestic political agenda, I believe that most in the community will see through the deceptively benevolent façade of this project.

Again, Mr. Kenny and his friends should be called to task by the EKN for their insensitive use of communist imagery and slogans to further their own cause. He must begin to realize that the victims of communism are not just former Alliance or Reform party members. They are NDP’ers, Liberals, PC’s and Bloc supporters. He does not own this subject or this issue. For this project to move forward, he must move graciously to invite all of our communities and those of all political stripes to join and take leadership. Otherwise, it will remain what it seemingly is now – a partisan pet project, without any real community representation that seeks to further a domestic political agenda on the backs of those who suffered under communism: And that would be a tragic shame.

Anonymous is waging some kind of a war here. What is ironic is that only one person has identified themselves in this skirmish. And that is R.M. Sehr.

Anonymous, I find you lacking in that you have strong opinions, but neither the courage nor the conviction to put a face to them.

I’ve just returned from a far-away place, where courage is admired. I can’t say I admire you.

Come now. While I do respect your integrity, your "admiration" is not something I particularly covet, and it will not falsely lure me into believing that this project is anything else than what it truly is: a partisan attempt to collect money and votes on the backs of our suffering and the victims of Soviet tyranny. The grossly offensive use of Soviet symbols during Mr. Kenny's recent protests is evidence enough of how much respect he really has for our victims.

I’ve been informed that for a short while, one can actually continue a debate on EE even after the attached Article is archived and hence I see your last retort.

You may have adequate grounds for initiating a debate about Mr. Kenny, but proposing a halt to the project, may kill it forever. And it is here that I feel you err.

As for whether you “particularly covet my admiration” or not, my point was simply deductive:

In place “A” courage is admired:: you lack “courage”:: I don’t admire you.

Whatever your feelings are about me are totally irrelevant.

You have my e-mail… let’s talk.

With all due respect - a debate is just what is required. To attack any dissenting voice or discussion on this very important subject is dangerous. I believe that the members of our community should be informed about this project from every angle before making any decisions regarding it - including the uglier sides of it.
I suspect that any call for more transparency or simply some clear information about this project will be attacked - as is typical of the Minister in charge of this project - as being un-Estonian.
Many in the community will not bow to unreasonable political pressure or intimidation to support this project unless there is greater transparency and some effort to include the community in it. In its current form, the project seems to be an effort by The Minister and his former Alliance party friends to win votes on the backs of our suffering - and that is simply not right.
