It just happens that during Soviet times the govt of the day banned the use of this letter because of its western connotations, but still the west continues to do the Russkies a huge favour by retrospectively acknowledging the use of this letter when registering names elsewhere, thereby helping to eradicate another serious flaw that the Russians don't have to confess to. It goes to show how shallow is the political understanding of the Western world.

0Transliteration, i.e. expressing Russian words written in cyrillic script into English or Estonian using the Latin script, goes according to conventions that have nothing to do with politics. There are alternatives and they change over time (that's how Peking became Beijing, for example).

Maxim is the most informed writer on Estonian affairs, though occasionally someone from Toronto gets it right. Personally, I wish to see more of Maxim's writing in EE. I don't see anyone expressing these sorts of intelligent and perceptive ideas who form part of the local intelligentsia.
