Peeter's pieces are always a welcome treat to read. I relish them tremendously, unlike the grandmotherly figure who espoused very different (and somewhat understandable) feelings. During the Soviet occupation, it was rare to see someone shouting at someone else for not speaking the local language, but the sense of a dying nation was already so wounding for morally upright Estonians living under occupation. Though by no means suggesting any kind of occupation in Toronto, the sense of woundedness at the loss of culture from our midst is distressing to a lot of older folk. That can be understood, and no doubt the author senses this as well. Our only advantage is that so far historically, we have not fallen on as bad times as, for example, the Mari people and Livonians, though this feeling is only too true when you live among the Estonian community abroad, wherever that may be. It doesn't much matter these days. The plight is the same everywhere.

Is there a Maxim fan out there who can make some sense out of his comment?
If so, please step forward and enlighten us.

Maxim writes in a style known as "stream-of-unconsciousness”. Don't attempt to understand, let it bypass your conscious mind and go straight into your subconscious. Better yet, just ignore it.

I don't know what to say, Toomas. I'm honoured that you should make the effort to comment on my comment. However, it flies a little in the face of what you suggest to others (to ignore it completely). Maybe you live by the slogan do as I say, not as I do...anyway, it certainly looks that way.

(mitte ainult vanaemadega)

yep. Küsida või kommenteerida polegi nagu väga midagi. Peale selle ehk, et "why the f*** don't you speak Estonian?" Kellele ja mille jaoks see jutt siin sai kirja pandud?

Why was this article even published? It's as useful for readers as Maxim's tortured logic.
