Well . . . it looks like everyone is on board with Eesti . . . except . . . umm . . . Stephen Harper.
Surely he and Van Loan wouldn't abandon Estonia?
T10 May 2007 13:07
I wouldn't be surprised.
Count the votes:
Estonians in GTA - approx. 8,000
Russians in GTA - approx 200,000
M10 May 2007 13:56
I was told that it's closer to 350,000-400,000.
Either way, it's sad and leaves me wondering as to who OUR friends really are..
Maxim.10 May 2007 14:09
You need to do a lot more work at convincing your local members about the seriousness of the situation. It's obvious that they are influenced by the most outspoken lobby group, and certainly if that means the Russians, then get to work and scream louder than they do!! Don't be backward in coming forward, please.
M10 May 2007 14:33
I suspect that Harper and P Van Loan aren't worried about losing any of the Estonian vote or $$. Otherwise they would have reacted to or would have AT LEAST acknowleged the crisis.

The question is: will Canadian Estonians forgive their ignorance or will they take them to task?

I have sent 2 emails to my MP, Bev Oda. She hasn't even acknowledged receipt of these.
I'm very disappointed in our Canadian response! (or lack thereof)
Has anyone else gotten a response from their MPs?

Many of the Russians in Toronto are Russians Jews. You can be sure that they are on our side having suffered at the hands of the Russian chauvinists.
to - M10 May 2007 15:50
Not everyone is on our side -- Putin's employee, the former PM of Germany Gerhard Schroeder, called the relocation of the statue a violation of all of the norms of civilization.

Pray that you don't hear anything from France -- if we do, it will sound much the same.

That said, it's nice to see that Estonia is overwhelmingly supported and that Russia is essentially alone, looking thuggish and untrustworthy -- not a good candidate for the WTO, the EU or anything else. Russia will be hurt by this affair, in the long run, much more than Estonia.

Liberal MP Bryon Wilfert brought up the crisis in The House of Commons LAST THURSDAY!!!
McKay avoided the question.
There seems to be a focused effort by the government to avoid the issue.

Looks like someone made a deal with the devil:

"Deripaska is one of Putin's favourite oligarchs, which in the post-Yeltisin system means that he is available to serve the regime's political purposes, including its foreign policy purposes." -Globe and Mail Today
jk11 May 2007 07:11
According to this morning's Globe, Stephen Harper's good friend Mike Harris brokered the Magna deal just as the crisis was peaking in Tallinn.

Stronach admits to having had long conversations with Putin over the past few weeks.

The US State departement has red flagged Deripaska as a potential foreign policy threat.

Is the Kremlin dictating Canada's foreign policy and its NATO relations?
Anna11 May 2007 08:09
Co-incidence?? I think not!
Money and politics - they're always in bed together.
Again, I shake my head in disgust.
"Canada - strong and free." Hmph!!
M11 May 2007 09:34
Canadian foreign policy: SOLD to the highest bidder, Vladimir Putin and his oligarchs.

I'm not a keen fan of Harper's but I respectED him for his strength of character. I never would have imagined a scenario like this.

prior to becoming canada's pm ,
harper was recruited to the one world order by former canadian pm muldoon (who is a bronfmann bagman), witness harper's participation (2003) and hosting of the bilderberger conference in ottawa (2006) .... this role fosters globalization in the pursuit of a one world government ... and further, he is working with usa and mexican leaders on creating a north american union with a new currency, the 'amero' ....

Russia is is Estonia's third-largest trading partner after Finland and Sweden. So, the boycott of Estonian goods that is presently being organized will cause considerable short-term disruption. Nonetheless, such boycotts are notoriously ineffective because too many people, including Russians, have an incentive to violate them.
Petroleum is especially difficult to control. Once it's in the international market (Rotterdam), it's no longer Russian, Saudi or Iranian -- it's simply petroleum. And don't lose sight of the reality that Russia needs to export it. An economy mired in corruption and criminality can't produce much of anything. It can make money only by exporting something that is already there -- an unprocessed natural resource.
Maxim.10 May 2007 23:31
Anonymous makes some extremely fine points here. These are of course matters that the Russians will have to contend with themselves, but chances are that things will go the way that Anonymous has suggested. Thanks for these points of view.
Maximus11 May 2007 07:41
The blockade of Estonian goods to Russia won't be that effective and will have negligible impact on the economy. Russian trade account for less than 10% of all cross boarder trade and about 1% of Estonian GDP. Most banks have revised their forecasts already and have chopped off only 0.1-0.2% growth due to the current crisis.

The main driver of the Estonian economy at this time is internal consumption and to be honest the economy could stand to cool off a little bit as it's been on the verge of overheating for awhile. Ironically the boycott of goods could actually help the Estonian economy with "soft landing".
