0to look at the aftermath of the situation, which now seems to be turning in quite a different direction. There is criticizm coming through from our neighbours in the Western alliance, and it predominantly focuses on Ansip's extremely poor timing for the removal of the statue. The long-term picture is difficult to analyze, but chances are that the rift between Moscow and Tallinn will not be easily forgotten. I have heard enough varied opinion from the local Russian side to say that their arguments make a lot of sense as well.

0Maxim is probably correct this time. The timing was terrible. Had he waited a month or two (or even better until December) and moved the statue then there would probably had been less problems.
However, the likelihood of violence was always there considering Putin has his youth groups ready to go anywhere to defend the motherland.

0Most critics seem to agree that Dec 24th when it's too busy to be thinking about some stupid Tõnismäe monument (if you're young and tend to think that way anyway as most of the young looters were..), and by that date you're probably so tired of winter and can't wait for spring...well, it's written in the stars; the best possible date of all. As it happens, spring sunshine and first signs of youthful vitality seemed to be the powderkeg that undid most of the government's homework.
