Thank you for telling your story.
I hope E.E. publishes more like this.
Peeter Pervelaid04 Nov 2006 13:25
This is a poignantly written piece, but it follows much the same kind of pattern that most of these stories tend to do. We all know that it is right and just that good Estonians made a successful exit in 1944, and the bad ones became commies and stayed, but that's not the whole story. Let's get a more rounded picture, and include some stories which do more than simply draw a dividing line between good and bad.
To Peeter Pervelaid07 Nov 2006 12:19
"This is a poignantly written piece", [Truly, it is.] "but it follows much the same kind of pattern that most of these stories tend to do." [Yes, she starts at the beginning and works toward the end. What should she do instead?] "We all know that it is right and just that good Estonians made a successful exit in 1944, and the bad ones became commies and stayed," [I presume that you are being sarcastic here -- for reasons known only to your therapist.] "but that's not the whole story." [Correct. It's not even a part of the story because no one has said anything so patently false and ugly.] "Let's get a more rounded picture," [How? By adding falsehood or ideology to a simple story truthfully told?] "and include some stories which do more than simply draw a dividing line between good and bad." [Tell us what you mean by this vague and sinister insinuation.]

Isn't it enough for you that someone tells us their story in terms that describe the broader human condition -- that there is injustice in the world, concentrated in the circumstances of war and communism? Here, Estonian civilian and Soviet soldier are, in different ways, equally victims of injustice and both retain their humanity. Yet, you demand something more without specifying what it is.

The style of of your comment, Peeter Pervelaid, is exactly like Maxim's: the tone is one of intellectual superiority, the grammatical composition is flawed, vague and clumsy, and factual matters are false and insulting. The resulting impression is one of conceit, stupidity, confusion and resentment. Only Maxim is capable of writing in this manner.

Maxim! You promised to open your own web-site. Why are you continuing to harass us?
Impartial judge08 Nov 2006 09:59
Let's keep Maxim out of this one please! I for one am sick of him being made the scapegoat here. Why twist Pervelaid's message to suggest something which to me it clearly does not? And please; let's give up on Maxim-he's given up on us-finally.
Not fooled08 Nov 2006 10:49
Pervelaid, Jaanituli, and now Impartail Judge. Maxim, again, quite obviosuly

Max: you are hiding behind the cloak of anonymity, your schizo names fool nobody... You cannot change your style, and your clumsy deceptions make you even more risible. Defending yourself whiule using the name impartial judge is too much, even for you.
to impartial judge08 Nov 2006 13:02
In what way was Pervelaid's message twisted?
In what way does it differ from Maxim's?

Ühinen igati "Impartial judge 08 Nov 2006 09:59

Lugupidavalt,
Johannes Pahapill

PS Kuna mul puudub isegi elementaarsem originaal mõte, siis ma ainult "ühinen". Vott siis see Kersoni proua, kelle rahadest ma elan, ütleb "Jukku, oled tubli poiss!"

Ja mina lisaks "To Peeter Pervelaid"
to Palun08 Nov 2006 18:47
Mina kirjutasin selle varjunime all. Küsiks miks Te mind soovite tuvastada? Kas olen kuidagi eksinud. Kas panete mind koos Maximiga ühte patta?

Jah. Samma laul teisel viisil.
Faithful reader08 Nov 2006 19:25
Will it EVER end?
Ms Aer has shared a heartfelt story with us. It is one of thousands of stories that I for one would love to read. It gives me, a person who wasn't around in those horrible times, a window on what it was like to live through it.
PLEASE don't poison every story with this mindless drivel!
I think the purpose of these comment areas is to discuss the article that has been presented.
Let's use it for that purpose.
Take your witch hunts to the foorum. At least there, they don't take away from the meaningful articles.
PS - EestiElu, you do a FANTASTIC job! I've had comments from relatives in Eesti saying that our paper is more interesting to read than Postimees.
We're very lucky.
Anonymous08 Nov 2006 19:51
I also wish that it would end "faithful reader". But how can this come about? When Maxim comes here to insult us, silence implies agreement. Therefore, I think that we should respond in some manner; but, Maxim is impervious to fact and reasoned argument and, similarly, to mockery and ridicule.
Do you have any suggestions?
To Anonymous08 Nov 2006 20:14
Really, enough is enough. Could you not respond to a simple request without poking at this poor Maxim?
Please . . . take your grudge to some other virtual wrestling ring.
A.N.08 Nov 2006 20:31
The only way is to IGNORE those comments and stick to the point.
Meaningful dialogue is good. Name-calling is, ... how to say this....
Haritud inimesed ei tegutse niimoodi.
Tubli08 Nov 2006 20:46
Well said.
I'm not holding my breath, but let's hope that it ends with that . . .
EsterMark05 Nov 2006 14:57
My father was executed on 8/22/41, night before the German troops occupied the village. We would have been declared "enemies of the people" and deported or worse by the returning communists in 1944. My mother with us two children could not escape on a fishing boat to Sweden, so she took a chance fleeing to the collapsing Germany in October 1944. US Army rescued us there in April 1945. We were neither good nor bad, just grasping at any chance to survive.
to Naima Aer07 Nov 2006 17:23
Your story is touching. I hope that you share more of your recollections with us.
to Maxim08 Nov 2006 18:33
Maxim. Are you proud of what you are doing here? Do you truly believe that what you state is true? If so, step forth and identify yourself as a man of integrity and a seeker of truth. And so that you will no longer be misunderstood, write an article summarizing your position and your mission.
who's the victim here?09 Nov 2006 05:13
In this installment, Maxim tells us that, "We all know that it is right and just that good Estonians made a successful exit in 1944, and the bad ones became commies and stayed".
Is any of this true? No.
Does Maxim believe it? Not likely.
Did Maxim write this only to insult and provoke us? Almost certainly.
Does this call for a rebuttal? Yes.
Is this, as someone suggests, "poking at this poor Maxim?" No.
Should we, as someone suggests, " take [our] grudge to some other virtual wrestling ring?" Absolutely not. This is our community newspaper. It's not to be monopolized by a freak with a compulsion to torment us with outrageous mendacity.

Maxim promised to set up his own web-site where his "supporters" (to use his word) can hear his message. He hasn't and he will not; because his purpose is to upset those who have no desire to hear him.
PLEASE stop09 Nov 2006 06:18
Calling someone in this community a "freak" is abusive. I don't recall anyone personally attacking you, despite the crude and insulting language.

Could the moderator please ban the IP of this individual. No other mainstream board would let stand this sort of behaviour.
Anonymous09 Nov 2006 08:12
I, also, would like to see "the war of words" come to an end but I doubt that a unilateral silence will achieve it.

Can you, or anyone, recall a harsh word about Maxim that wasn't written in response to a gratuitous provocation? I certainly don't. So, why do you ask the attacked to cease defensive actions? Should this space be made a sheltered-workshop for Maxim's loony attacks upon our community?

Is your name Maxim, by chance?

Calling someone a freak is abusive when it isn't appropriate. The description is apt in this instance. Need proof? Go to the archives.

I agree with your last comments anonymous. Unfortunately IMHO there is something going on below the surface that I don't quite understand. It appears our friend Peter is present thanks to Maxims comment. I also suspect his friends in Estonia are stirring the pot. I believe that the only way this is going to be solved is for EE to allow only registered user to comment . The person who mentioned blocking an IP address does not understand DHCP and WIFI connections to the internet. I wonder where was PLEASE when Estonian women were being insulted.
Anonymous09 Nov 2006 10:03
Two weeks ago, Maxim announced that he would launch his own web-site and let us live in peace. Already, he's back here again.
I'm guessing that he discovered that a web-site is a lot of work and pretty much useless for attacking our community if we don't go there to witness it.
The suggestion that commentators should register is a good one. It would put an end to most of the obnoxious commentary. How it would impact Maxim, however, is impossible to predict.
I thought that it was actually amusing that the reader "Please" would make a proposal for peace that included no mention of Maxim. For him, 'peace' must mean 'passive victims'. Odds are that it was Maxim speaking; possibly, Peter. Beyond that it's hard to say -- there aren't all that many kooks among us.
Thanks for the sensible suggestion, EE_Lugeja. I hope that others like yourself voice ideas of their own because, simply put, our community deserves peace.

I for one am as sick of Anonymous' opinions as I am of Maxim's. They are really both as bad as each other! Anonymous deserves the same kind of treatment as he/she dishes out to Maxim. It's a pity this site has come to be known for the smallish group self-righteous bigots displaying the worst kind of narrow-mindedness imaginable in the free world. Yes please; let's get on with the business of peaceful living, and stop the accusations.
to PLEASE09 Nov 2006 12:10
Why are you repeating yourself? Also, why don't you mention Maxim here? He is the one who ALWAYS starts the war. Can you point to even ONE exception?
Who are you anyway? Maxim, I'll bet! Why shouldn't we be allowed to answer your slurs and accusations? And its not just anonymous. Its just about everybody. Your only supporters are Peter and yourself writing under aliases.

Maxim believes that the Soviets liberated Estonia.
Anonymous believes that they occupied it.

YES PLEASE states that "I for one am as sick of Anonymous' opinions as I am of Maxim's. They are really both as bad as each other!"

If you see equivalence there, then you have a serious problem on your hands.

Ditto.
I don' t think that this phantom Maxim is right, nor do I think you're right in viciously %@!#$& those opinions which rub against your own.
Boards like this are meant for the expression and debate of ideas not character assassination.
If that’s your agenda – take it elsewhere.
If Maxim really believes that the Soviets liberated Estonia, so be it.
If you think that the Hitler was going to include Estonia as part of the master race, so be it.
I welcome the debate but leave the ad hominem stuff in the school yard.
OK?
Anonymous09 Nov 2006 19:59
Maxim doesn't welcome debate. He forces himself upon us with a comment calculated to stir up our emotions; then, in the face of a predictable response, he cries, "character assassination."
